Today’s parents know that there are so many flashpoints in the modern home where children can get into trouble that it’s hard to think of them all. Parents must be on particular high alert in the summertime, when kids have more time on their hands and are likely to be home more.
No doubt you’ve been through your home many, many times assessing the possible hazards for your children. Hate to add to your worries, but if you haven’t already thought about your kids and HVAC safety, it’s probably time to add this one to the list.
Playing It Safe Around the HVAC System
You may have thought that since the HVAC is out of sight, it’s unlikely it could harm the kid. It’s true the air conditioning and heating systems are constructed so that for the most part, they do their jobs unseen in a cabinet, in a basement or attic. The only parts that are usually visible are the vents and the outdoor compressor/condenser. Let’s start with those.
Vents can be an enticement to mayhem for some little children, particularly if located in the floor. It might be fun to the rug rats to pour liquid or powder detergent into them and see what happens. Loose vent covers can be an invitation to throw toys inside. It’s a good idea to screw vent covers in place, and possibly put a screen over them.
You may also want to lock HVAC cabinet doors or otherwise prevent access to the interior HVAC equipment. Parts can burn, cut, and electrocute; children can also cause extensive damage by throwing things or pouring substances into the equipment. The same thing goes for the outdoor condenser/compressor.
Children can also find ways to climb up to the thermostat, even if it’s located over their heads. Check the settings on your system more frequently to ensure they haven’t been altered by curious hands.
