If you’re the outdoors type, you’ve probably been looking forward to summertime camping trips and all the attendant activities that go with them, such as fishing, hiking, cooking out, touring, and getting together around a campfire. But unless you’re headed for the higher elevations, camping can get a little warm during the afternoons and evenings.
These days, with the advent of “glamping,” or glamour camping, the emphasis is on being comfortable while enjoying the great outdoors. We’re here to make a few suggestions on how to enhance that glamping experience with a few HVAC essentials.
Cool Camping
If you’re lucky enough to have a motor home or a luxury bus conversion, you’re probably not worried about keeping cool since your rig likely came fully equipped with air conditioning and heating. But if you’re a camper with a smaller rig, such as a truck camper, travel trailer or fifth wheel trailer, you may have to ponder some options when it comes to installing a cooling unit. One of our favorite choices for cooling off during your glamping adventure is the ductless mini-split system.
A 9000-BTU mini-split can cool or heat up to 500 square feet and might be just right for your RV or camper. With very little installation work needed, a mini split can easily be fitted in an RV. Easily powered by a generator or direct power source, they work well when you’re parked in campgrounds with hookups.
The main advantage mini-splits have over portable air conditioners or rooftop units is that they are quieter and cool with a nice, easy flow of air rather than that rushing torrent you’d experience with a standard A/C.
Other Cooling Options
Camping in a campground without hookups? Bring along portable fans that are powered either with standard D batteries or USB rechargeable batteries.
Consider equipping your rig with an awning to shade the side of the camper — east or west — where you’ll spend most of your time.
