Having poor indoor air quality (IAQ) in your Lorain home can put you and your family at risk of developing health issues. One of the more unusual factors that can affect IAQ is candles. Find out more about how certain kinds of candles can lower the quality of the air inside your home.
Scented Candles and IAQ
Not all candles have an effect on your IAQ, but some can have major effects on it. Certain types of scented candles have been found to be the main culprits that affect IAQ in homes. Scented candles with poor combustion and wicks that are longer in length are the ones that can lower your air quality the most. If you tend to burn these candles in your home, check your HVAC filter. You should see the effects of these candles on your air quality by doing so.
Candles and HVAC Filters
The HVAC filter in your home traps indoor pollutants and other particles that can lead to decreased indoor air quality. You should be changing your filter on a regular basis in order to maintain healthy air quality inside your home. When you check your filter after burning scented candles, you might find that it has a black appearance. The soot from these candles can quickly cover your HVAC filter, which shortens its life span. This means that you’ll need to change filters more often to make the air in your home healthier.
Choosing Better Candles to Burn
To protect your IAQ, choose candles that aren’t paraffin-based, such as candles made of palm oil, beeswax or soy. These candles should have a cleaner burn inside your home, which means they won’t give off as much soot. You should also get into the habit of trimming wicks prior to lighting them, so that you won’t be burning candles with longer wicks.
