At the end of daylight saving time on November 4th, you’ll be setting back all the clocks in your home by one hour. To make sure your HVAC system is primed for energy savings and comfort during the coming winter, you should also adjust your thermostat by following these steps:
Verify that the Time Falls Back
If you have a programmable thermostat, it likely makes automatic one-hour time adjustments at the start and end of daylight saving time. To keep your scheduling on time, it’s wise to check that this essential change was made, and do it manually if necessary.
Switch Over to Heating Mode
If you haven’t already changed your HVAC over to heating mode, the end of daylight saving time is a good reminder to make the switch so your home stays toasty warm.
Make Seasonal Scheduling Changes
Once your heating system is operating, it’s good to recheck your programming and make any needed adjustments to save energy and maximize your family’s wintertime comfort. Although you’ll want to set a schedule that matches your typical daily routine, be sure to take these general setting tips into consideration too:
- Make daytime temperature adjustments. If your family members are away at work or school on weekdays, set the temperature back up to 10 degrees.
- Program overnight temperature setbacks. When everyone is normally asleep, there’s no need to keep the house too warm, so schedule nightly 10- to 15-degree setbacks.
- Don’t forget about warm up periods. When you’re setting your wintertime heating schedule, be sure to factor in warm up periods to ensure your home has reached a temperature that’s comfortable when you get up in the morning, or arrive back home at the end of the day.
Put in Fresh Thermostat Batteries
When you make thermostat adjustments for the end of daylight saving time, it’s a convenient time to replace the unit’s batteries, so you can rest easy that it will work reliably throughout the winter.
