Because most people spend as little time as possible in that cramped space beyond the ceiling, a few attic safety tips are in order. Attics aren’t constructed to the same safety standards as the living spaces below, so definite hazards exist. If you’re interested in having attic insulation supplemented, or HVAC ductwork installed in the attic inspected for leaks, for safety reasons it’s best to leave that job to a qualified professional.
If you venture up the ladder for other reasons, keep in mind these five attic safety tips.
1. Wear protective clothing.
Gloves, heavy clothes, a cap and sturdy shoes are standard. A breathing mask with a protection rating of N-95 is also recommended for protection against inhaling airborne insulation fibers and/or mold spores that may accumulate in the attic.
2. Stay aware of extreme temperatures.
During the cold Ohio winter, an attic can be just as frigid as the outdoor temperature, so dress warmly. Attic temperatures in summer can soar above 125 degrees as solar energy radiates through the roof, so do all attic tasks in the early morning before heat becomes dangerous.
3. Watch out for sharp objects.
Nails penetrating through the roof often protrude into the attic so be careful not to cut your head when moving about. Also, unfinished wooden structural components are fully exposed and a source of splinters and abrasions if contacted by bare skin.
4. Be careful where you step.
Most attics have a board walkway running down the center length of the space that is safe to walk on. Never step out on beds of fiberglass or cellulose insulation. The ceiling beneath the insulation will not support your weight and cause a serious fall into the room below.
5. Beware of bees.
Bee and wasp nests are sometimes found in attics. If you come upon one, don’t disturb the nest—you don’t want to be trapped in a cramped attic with a swarm of angry bees. Climb downstairs and call an exterminator.
