Changing Seasons Means Getting Your Thermostat Ready

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: March 7, 2019

Changing Seasons Means Getting Your Thermostat ReadyTemperatures will be heating up in the Lorain area, so it’s time to make sure that your thermostat is ready for the cooling season. What do you need to do in order to ensure that your home stays cool enough without drastically increasing your energy usage? Keep the following thermostat tips in mind.

Thermostat Setting

You should set your thermostat at a temperature that is comfortable for you. The recommended setting is 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re at home, although you can adjust this as needed. For example, you might want to lower it at night, so you can sleep in a cooler environment. Keep in mind that lowering the temperature by even a few degrees can raise your energy bills significantly.

Replace the Batteries

If you haven’t changed the batteries in your thermostat in a long time, replace them for the cooling season. Putting in new batteries helps ensure that your thermostat can continue to function, even if something goes wrong with your power.

Switch to a Programmable Thermostat

Avoid turning your air conditioning off during the day when you’re not home in order to save energy. Your house might heat up too much by the time you get home, which means your air conditioner will need to work harder to cool it off. Instead, consider getting a programmable thermostat if you have a manual one. This type of thermostat allows you to program temperature changes for certain times during the day.

Schedule Maintenance

Your entire HVAC system should have routine maintenance done before the cooling season begins. This maintenance should include having your thermostat inspected to make sure that it’s in good condition. If you’re having any problems with it, an HVAC technician can check it for you and make any repairs that are needed.
