In addition to making our homes simply more comfortable in hot weather, other air conditioning affects on health come with it. Residential air conditioning started to become widespread in the U.S. in the 1960s. Today, 87% of all houses nationwide are air conditioned and, in some parts of the country, the percentage is even greater.
Here are some air conditioning affects on health, both pro and con:
Positive Benefits
-
- Safer indoor temperatures in summer. High indoor temperatures can present health hazards to residents—particularly the very young and elderly. A/C keeps temperatures in the healthy range even during severe heat waves, reducing the incidence of heat-related illness.
- Lower indoor humidity. High indoor humidity can trigger mold growth as well as support other airborne bacterial contamination. The humidity reduction function of air conditioning keeps indoor levels below 60%, the maximum limit recommended by the EPA for healthy indoor air quality.
- Reduced airborne particulates. Dust, lint and other inert particles in the air cause irritation and allergic reactions. As long as the air conditioner is running, indoor air is continuously filtered by the system air filter, keeping particulate levels lower.
Potential Negatives
-
- Possible mold growth. A central A/C system includes two areas where moist conditions may trigger toxic mold: the indoor evaporator coil produces condensation, particularly on humid days, and the condensate drip pan beneath the indoor air handler may not drain properly. These ongoing moisture sources may encourage hidden mold contamination. Regular seasonal maintenance by a qualified HVAC professional includes inspection and preventive measures to disinfect these areas and prevent mold contamination.
- Dirty filter issues. An air conditioner air filter should be replaced monthly during the cooling season. If regular filter replacement is neglected, a dirty filter may become a breeding ground for toxic bacteria and microbes which, in turn, contaminate air circulating through the filter. If you don’t know how to change your air filter, ask your HVAC service technician to show you.
