Nationwide, warmer weather is extending well into the fall season. Along with warmer weather in the fall months, expect an extension of allergy season, as plants continue to produce pollen well into what used to be a time when allergy sufferers could expect relief.
There are a few things you can do about fall allergies, however. Read on and find out how to diminish allergens in your home with your HVAC system.
How Your HVAC Improves Indoor Air Quality
While your HVAC system’s primary duty is to cool and heat your home, it can also improve indoor air quality by removing airborne pollutants with the right air filter.
The inexpensive fiberglass filters most homeowners use will not do the trick. Although they are fine for trapping larger particles of dirt and dust that might otherwise enter the system’s workings, they will not trap the smaller particles that cause allergy sufferers to experience symptoms such as sniffles, burning eyes, throat irritation and headaches.
Use a good quality, pleated air filter made of polyester or cotton fibers to help stop fall allergies before they start. It should be rated between MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) 8-12, which is dense enough to trap particles but not so dense that it impedes air flow.
Change the air filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions: at least every three months, but perhaps more if you have conditions in your house that contribute to more air pollution, such as pet dander, high foot traffic, frequent opening of doors or windows that would allow pollen and dust to get inside the home, and the burning of paraffin candles.
Other Tips
Other things you can do to help reduce pollen and fall allergies:
- Brush off clothes and pets before entering the home.
- Vacuum floors and upholstered furniture frequently with a HEPA filter.
- Clean floors with a damp mop.
- Install a whole-house air purification system.
