During the winter holidays, everyone’s in a hurry, and most of us are wrapped up in activities that aren’t the norm. It’s easy to overlook safety, what with all the hustle and bustle, particularly when it comes to holiday fire hazards.
Just to keep fire safety front and center, here are common hazards to avoid.
- Dry Christmas Tree. When shopping for that perfect Christmas tree, be sure to check your selection for dryness before you load it on top of the car. Leaves (needles) should be plump and green, and there should be minimal shedding (a little shedding is no problem). Avoid trees that are yellowing and brittle. If the tree dries out excessively after you get it home, you should not keep it around. Dry trees are fire hazards. Avoid using electrical lights on dry trees or wreaths.
- Holiday Lighting. Avoid using electrical lights that are frayed or worn out. When stringing strands together, check the label for how many amps should be connected on one circuit. Do not use indoor lights outdoors. Don’t allow bulbs to rest on tree needles; use clips instead. Disconnect lights before leaving home or going to bed.
- Holiday Cooking. Most of us get so busy with our holiday preparations that it’s easy to become distracted. Whenever you’re baking or cooking on the stovetop, make sure that if you’re drawn away, you set a timer or some kind of reminder to check on your food. Many holiday fires originate in the kitchen.
- Heat Sources. It’s usually cold during the holidays, and during our celebrations, we may celebrate with a roaring fire in the fireplace or turn on a space heater for extra warmth. Never place a Christmas tree next to the fireplace, and keep space heaters a safe distance away. Use a fire screen in front of the fireplace.
- Candles. Use battery-operated candles if at all possible, but if you must use real candles, make sure they’re a safe distance from all flammable objects.
