No one wants to freeze during the winter season, but no one wants to spend a whole lot of money staying warm, either. Saving money in the winter will be much easier if you follow these five tips:
1. Set the Thermostat and Stick with It
Constantly changing your thermostat’s temperature has always proven to be a great way to waste money. Set the thermostat to a desired temperature and then leave it. You’ll have to decide what’s best for you and your family, but the optimal temperature to save money is typically 68 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night.
2. Seal Air Leaks in Your Home
When warm air is allowed to escape through small holes and cracks throughout your home, your heating equipment will be forced to run longer than it should. Check for drafts, primarily around the edges of your doors and windows, and seal them with either caulk or weatherstripping, depending on their size.
3. Use Portable Heaters
Turning on the heat will keep things warm, but unless you have a zoned system, you could be wasting energy by warming up areas that are unoccupied. If you only need to heat up a small space, then a portable heater will save you a good deal of money.
4. Keep Your Chimney Flue Shut
Leaving your chimney flue open when you’re not using your fireplace is a great way to waste energy by being forced to keep your heating equipment on for longer periods of time. The solution for this is a simple one, of course: Close the flue whenever the fireplace is not in use.
5. Close Blinds and Curtains
The warm air inside and the cold air outside can basically seep through the glass of your windows, leading to energy waste. Closing the blinds or curtains will help create a barrier. An even better alternative is to invest in window treatments that will create an even better barrier.
