Are Some Rooms In Your House Colder Than Others?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: February 11, 2020

Effective heat distribution means all living spaces in the home maintain consistent temperatures in accordance with the thermostat setting. Winter comfort should be the norm with no “chilly rooms” or “cold spots.” When an HVAC system is designed, the furnace output and ductwork are carefully matched to ensure adequate circulating warmth throughout the entire house.  Over time, however, certain changes can disrupt that balance and interfere with effective heat distribution.

If you’re noticing temperature inconsistency among different rooms — or other family members are mentioning it — here are some ways to ensure effective heat distribution throughout the house.

Check Airflow

Make sure the HVAC air filter isn’t dirty or clogged. Reduced system airflow means only rooms located closest to the furnace may receive adequate heating. Change the filter at least every other month all winter long and every month during the summer cooling season.

Verify Air Vents

Inspect supply vents in every room to ensure they are open and unobstructed by furniture or other objects. Return vents should also be checked. Homes may have individual returns in each room or a single central return vent located in a central hallway.

Get a Duct Inspection

Loss of conditioned air from the furnace or A/C is common due to leaky ductwork in houses that are more than 10 years old. Depending on the location of the leakage, this may mean that certain rooms are heat-deprived. A duct inspection and testing by a qualified HVAC contractor can determine the location and extent of duct leaks. The contractor can offer several options for sealing to restore full warm and cool air circulation.

Relocate the Thermostat

If the location of the thermostat exposes it to temperature influences such as heat from the kitchen or direct sunlight streaming through a window, overall comfort in the house may be affected. Make sure the thermostat is centrally located away from anomalous warm or cold drafts in an area that is representative of temperatures throughout the house.

The professionals at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning have more options to help ensure effective heat distribution in your home this winter.
