Mobile home HVAC units are necessarily different from those used to heat and cool a traditional house that’s built entirely or mostly on-site. Because mobile homes are manufactured in a factory and then moved to a lot for installation, a number of distinct requirements apply when it comes to maintaining indoor comfort in all seasons.
Two limitations may influence the choice of mobile home HVAC units:
- Lack of available indoor space for installation of a central furnace unit.
- Lack of installed permanent ductwork within the mobile home to circulate heated or cooled air from the HVAC unit.
Here are some options to overcome these issues and provide effective, energy-efficient heating and cooling for a mobile home:
Package Units
These units incorporate a furnace or A/C — or both — into a single unit that’s typically mounted on the roof of the mobile home. They are helpful alternatives when there’s not sufficient room inside the mobile home for an HVAC closet like that which encloses the furnace in a conventional house. A package unit places all HVAC components outdoors and typically blows conditioned air into the mobile home through a single roof opening.
Ductless Mini Splits
Ductless mini splits can deliver both cooling and heating to individual indoor living spaces. The system consists of a low-profile, wall-mounted unit inside the room which incorporates a heating/cooling coil and a blower. This indoor unit is linked by a narrow conduit that carries refrigerant to a compact outdoor coil-and-compressor unit about the size of large suitcase, typically located behind the mobile home.
In winter, the system functions like a standard heat pump, extracting latent heat energy from outdoor air and transferring it indoors, where it’s released by the coil and blower to warm the room. In summer, the coil’s functions reverse and it operates like a standard central A/C, removing heat that’s indoors and dispersing it outdoors. A large mobile home may incorporate more than one of these compact, efficient units to heat and cool individual living spaces without the need for installed ductwork to circulate conditioned air.
