Just when you needed cool comfort on a hot Ohio summer day, you have an AC that’s blowing warm air instead. Now what? Today’s air conditioners are more reliable and last longer than ever—a fact that’s evident in the longer warranty terms offered by major manufacturers. However, as with any mechanical system, things may go awry — and often at the least convenient time. If you’re faced with an AC blowing warm air, here are some possible solutions.
Check the Thermostat Settings
Make sure the thermostat function is set to “Cool” and the fan setting is in the “Auto” position. Also verify that the specific temperature setting is at least five degrees below current room temperature and cool enough to suit your preferences.
Inspect the Outdoor Unit
If the outdoor condenser unit — typically located behind or next to the house — is obstructed in any way, the system may be unable to disperse heat properly, causing airflow to be warm. Verify that nothing is blocking the fan grille on top of the unit and that the side vent slots on all sides are unobstructed.
Call for Professional Help
At this point, you’re out of DIY options and need the assistance of a qualified HVAC service technician to diagnose and resolve the issue. Some of the potential problems he’ll investigate include:
- Low refrigerant. If the refrigerant charge falls below specs, an A/C no longer extracts sufficient heat from the airflow. Air conditioners don’t consume refrigerant, so if the charge is low, it’s always due to a leak somewhere. An HVAC professional has specialized equipment to pinpoint the leak. After the repair, refrigerant will be added to restore it to the proper level.
- Leaky ducts. Air leaks in HVAC ductwork caused by deterioration or loosening joints between segments may leak cool air into unconditioned zones — like the crawl space or attic — and/or draw warm air into the ducts. Temperatures may become unstable as a result. After a ductwork inspection to determine the extent of the leakage, an HVAC contractor can offer sealing options to eliminate air loss.
