In these uncertain economic times, it’s important to save money however we can. One of the top ways to save this summer is to become more energy-efficient when we run our air conditioner. As you know, turning on the AC to cool down at the height of the hot season can really eat a hole in your budget. Here are some money-saving tips so you can keep your cool no matter the temperature.
1. Use fans.
Install ceiling fans with two-way blades. Run them counterclockwise in the summer to lift up heat and force cool air down from the walls. Reverse the blades in the winter to do the opposite. Also, use spot fans wherever needed to stir up breezes.
2. Install a programmable or smart thermostat.
Set a program for your thermostat that cuts down on energy use at night, when the temperature falls and you’re not moving around as much. If you’re gone during the day, set the thermostat up a few degrees then as well. If it’s cool enough at night, you may want to turn off the AC altogether, opening windows and using fans.
3. Air-seal your home.
Older homes develop minute cracks that leak conditioned air and let humid, unconditioned air inside. These air leaks can drive up your AC bill. Seal around door and window frames, baseboards, and the holes in exterior walls for plumbing, cables, and wires. Use insulation, caulk, and weatherstripping. Install fire-rated light covers in the attic for recessed lighting.
4. Cover windows during the day.
Prevent solar radiation from entering your home through the windows and heating it up. Close blinds, drapes, or shades during the day. A better solution is to install tinted window film to block the sun’s rays. There are different kinds, so be sure to check what kind of film is appropriate for your window glass.
