Your HVAC system is designed to keep you comfortable by cooling and heating your home. But as it cools and heats, it also does a couple of other things: It helps to regulate the humidity level in your home, and, depending on the kind of air filter you use, it may improve your home’s indoor air quality.
Sometimes, however, conditions in the home may be such that the HVAC system needs a bit of help to do these other jobs. That’s when in-home appliances can help.
How In-Home Appliances Help Your HVAC System Provide Comfort
- Dehumidifier.
There are many reasons why a home might be too humid for an HVAC system to regulate the humidity as it should: a dirty air filter; plumbing leaks; or the fact that the home is located in a perennially damp location. If you’ve addressed all these issues, maybe you’re ready for a dehumidifier. You can try a portable model, but the best results will come from whole-home dehumidifiers plumbed into the HVAC system so that the moisture is sent out of your home. With portable types, you have to empty the reservoirs. These in-home appliances can help you maintain a lower relative humidity level of less than 50%. - Humidifier.
In our humid area, we seldom need to add moisture to our homes, but sometimes the need is there. If your home is perennially too dry, in turn aggravating respiratory issues or drying out home furnishings, you may need a humidifier. Humidifiers are often used during the winter to moisten irritated nasal passages. Again, you may opt for a portable model, but these require care; count the whole-home humidifier as one of the most beneficial and carefree in-home appliances. - Air-Cleaning Systems.
Using a good-quality air filter can remove a good many airborne pollutants, but not all. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation lights (UVGI) installed in your HVAC as in-home appliances can treat mold, mildew, and fungus, while a carbon-activated filter can treat gases such as cigarette smoke and volatile organic compounds.
