Cold Weather Fires Can Happen. Learn the Common Causes.

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: October 15, 2020

When cold weather hits, most of us prefer spending time cozied up indoors while waiting for the return of warm weather. But this also increases the chances for cold weather fires occurring. In fact, most house fires occur during the cold winter months. Here’s a look at some of the common causes of cold weather fires.

Heating

Heating is one of the leading causes of home fires. All heating systems can pose a fire risk if they’re not maintained and used properly. Two out of every five home-heating equipment fires involve space heaters. Other types of heating equipment that play a role in home fires include:

  • Fireplaces or chimneys.
  • Central heating systems.
  • Water heaters.
  • Heat lamps.

Candles

Candles are responsible for more than a third of home decoration fires. More than 50% of candle fires start when the candles are too close to items that can burn, such as bedding, furniture, curtains, and decorations. Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day are the peak days for candle fires.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees become more flammable as they dry out inside your home. Most Christmas tree fires involve lighting and electrical distribution equipment. Having the trees too close to heat sources like candles and heating equipment also contributes to Christmas tree fires.

Cooking

Believe it or not, cooking is one of the leading causes of cold weather fires. People tend to cook indoors more often when it’s cold outside. The peak days for cold weather fires caused by home cooking are Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

As you stay warm and cozy this winter, don’t forget to be more safety-conscious. Keep lit candles and heating equipment away from combustible materials. Also, ensure your Christmas tree is at least three feet away from heat sources. Turn off light strings and decorations before going to bed or leaving home. When cooking, never leave kitchen appliances unattended.

When it comes to your heating system, make sure to have it inspected and serviced by a professional every year to lessen the chance of cold weather fires. If you live in the Lorain area and need any heating services, don’t hesitate to contact the experienced professionals at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning.
