In the near future, climate change could have devastating effects, such as severe food shortages, climate-induced conflicts, and increased wildfires. With half of your home’s energy consumption coming from heating and cooling, it makes sense to make saving energy through the HVAC system a priority to help stop climate change. Let’s break down the effect of HVAC energy efficiency on climate change.
Efficiency Ratings
The HVAC industry has been working hard to increase the energy efficiency of heating and cooling units. We now have heating systems with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of as much as 98.6%. New air-conditioning units also have higher energy-efficiency ratings than older units.
The compressor technology, which is at the heart of numerous AC units, has hardly reached 14% of its theoretical efficiency potential. In the future, we’re sure to have cooling systems with higher efficiency ratings than those currently on the market.
Standard Energy Star-certified air conditioners, for example, will have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of as much as 27.5. Ductless units will have up to a 33.1 SEER rating. Heat pumps are expected to have HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) ratings of up to 13.5.
So what do high-efficiency ratings have to do with climate change? HVAC units with ultra-high efficiency ratings use their fuel source more efficiently. They consume significantly less electricity or gas. Consequently, there’s a reduction in direct carbon emissions, which affects climate change. The carbon emissions associated with the production of electricity and fossil fuels also decrease.
Refrigerant Evolution
The R-22 refrigerant that was used by older cooling systems has ozone-depleting substances. It’s been linked to climate change. Fortunately, its phaseout was finalized in 2019. Newer systems use R410-A refrigerant, which helps the systems utilize electricity more efficiently and is more eco-friendly.
You can play a significant role in fighting climate change by upgrading to newer heating and cooling units with higher efficiency ratings and a more environmentally friendly refrigerant.
