Unless you’re in the HVAC industry, you probably don’t give a lot of thought to topics like HVAC demand. Just in case you ever wondered, demand for the comforts of HVAC systems — particularly air conditioning —is way up and shows every indication of continuing that trend.
Here are some of the reasons why that HVAC demand is growing domestically as well as internationally.
Why HVAC Demand Is Growing
1. Climate. With increasingly hotter and longer summers being recorded, the need for air conditioning is being felt in states where summers used to be short and cool. This trend is also being noted in some European countries. It’s now not unusual to see new homes in more northerly latitudes that include air conditioners along with central heating.
2. More Construction. Although the COVID-19 pandemic makes it hard to know if the trend will continue, residential construction started growing across the country as we began to recover from the 2009 recession. The construction growth fueled the need for more HVAC installations. In addition, there have been a number of natural disasters over the past 10 to 15 years that have resulted in the need for more construction and more HVAC sales.
3. Technological Innovations. The HVAC industry continues to offer technological innovations that are fueling greater HVAC demand. For instance, heat pump technology has been improved so that this equipment can heat efficiently in northern climates — which was a shortcoming that used to keep heat pump use down in the north until recently. Also, new air conditioners have shifted away from Freon, a refrigerant that was harmful to the ozone layer. Freon is no longer being manufactured, so gradually, air conditioners that use it are being replaced.
4. Greater Efficiency. Another factor fueling HVAC demand is the need for greater energy efficiency, both in residential and commercial settings. As HVAC systems grow ever more efficient, more businesses and homeowners are finding they can save money on energy bills by replacing old equipment with newer technology.
