Why Is Your Home’s Temperature Fluctuating So Much?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: January 7, 2021

Consistent indoor temperatures are essential to home comfort. Temperature fluctuations can downgrade your comfort and increase your utility bills. Read on to learn the common reasons behind fluctuating temperatures, along with what you can do to prevent them.

Drafts Coming Through Doors and Windows

Did you know that drafts can come through your doors and windows even when they’re closed? The gaps around your door and window frames, no matter how small they are, can allow a significant amount of outdoor air to seep into your home and cause fluctuating temperatures. Seal the cracks and gaps around your windows and doors with caulk and weatherstripping.

Blocked Vents

Furniture and rugs can block vents and create temperature fluctuations in the air nearby. Move any furniture that may be blocking your vents to facilitate the easy spreading of air throughout your home. Keep rugs away from your floor vent.

Thermostat Location

If your thermostat is installed on the first floor, the floor will likely be more comfortable than the second floor. You can solve this issue by getting a zoned HVAC system. The system divides your home into separate heating and cooling zones, with independent thermostats for every zone.

Chimney-Flue Issues

Your chimney flue conveys smoke to the atmosphere. If you leave it open once the fire’s out, it will draw out your indoor heat. For that reason, make sure you close it once the fire is out.

Poor HVAC Maintenance

An HVAC air filter that’s clogged with dust and debris not only lowers your indoor air quality but also makes your home’s temperature uncomfortable. Loose or broken components also affect your HVAC unit’s ability to heat or cool your home comfortably, leading to fluctuating temperatures. You should change your air filters and schedule HVAC tuneups regularly to keep your system working correctly and consistently.

Taking the necessary steps to prevent fluctuating temperatures will also enhance your home’s energy efficiency. Contact us at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning for high-quality HVAC maintenance in the Lorain area. We have more than 50 years of combined experience in heating and air conditioning.
