Annual HVAC maintenance is essential for keeping your system in top condition. In the interim, though, there are also a few things you can do on your own to make sure your HVAC continues running as smoothly and as efficiently as possible. Here are some tips for cleaning your HVAC system.
Cleaning Your HVAC Ducts
A full ductwork cleaning is a complex and expensive process that should only be done by professionals. However, there’s a more basic cleaning method you can perform periodically to keep air flowing and improve your IAQ.
Start by covering all the vents in your home with cloths or paper towels and running the fan for a few minutes. This will help loosen up the dirt, making it easier to remove. Next, remove the covers or grilles with a screwdriver. Clean them gently in the sink with warm water and dish soap, using a microfiber cloth, and set them out to dry.
Then you can get started on cleaning your HVAC ductwork. Use a vacuum cleaner with a hose and a brush attachment. Reach into each uncovered vent as far as you can with the hose and vacuum all around. This removes excess dirt, helping your filter last longer and ensuring better airflow. Finally, replace the vent covers.
Cleaning Your HVAC Coils
Your AC coils can also become clogged with dirt over time. Your HVAC technician will clean them during annual maintenance, but sometimes they get dirty more quickly than that. Here’s a makeshift method for cleaning your HVAC coils.
They sell HVAC coil cleaner at most home-improvement stores, or you can make your own by mixing any mild detergent with warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the coils thoroughly and let stand for a few minutes to make the dirt easier to remove. Wipe the solution away with a cloth or brush. Then, rinse the coils off with a gentle spray from the hose.
