Cleaning Your HVAC Ducts? Use These Key Tools to Do the Job.

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: March 18, 2021

The air ducts are the lungs of your HVAC system. So, you certainly want to make sure that they receive periodic cleaning to maximize HVAC efficiency and maintain good indoor air quality. To do a fantastic and thorough job, you’ll need the right HVAC duct cleaning tools, patience, and know-how.

HVAC Duct Cleaning Tools

Below is a list of the tools and protective wear you need to clean ducts.

  • Vacuum cleaner. You’ll need a vacuum cleaner with an extension hose and attachments.
  • Screwdriver. You’ll need a screwdriver to remove registers and grilles.
  • Cleaning cloths. Cleaning cloths or paper towels will be used to wipe away dust and dirt.
  • Filter. Install a quality air filter when you’re finished.
  • Mask. Use a quality respirator mask to protect your lungs, mouth, nose, and throat.
  • Goggles. Wear safety goggles that protect your eyes from impacts and airborne particles.
  • Gloves. Use safety gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal edges.

DIY Cleaning with HVAC Duct Cleaning Tools

If you’re opting for the do-it-yourself method for duct cleaning with HVAC duct cleaning tools, follow these steps:

  • Power. Turn off the HVAC system at the thermostat.
  • Cover registers. Place paper towels on the inside of supply registers to prevent dust from entering your home.
  • Vacuum. Use the vacuum hose and extensions to clean the ducts.
  • Return grilles. Remove return air grilles and vacuum the ducts inside.
  • Fan. The airflow will send any loose debris to the covered supply registers.
  • Uncover registers. Remove the paper towels from the supply air registers.
  • Air filter. Install a new air filter.

Professional Cleaning with HVAC Duct Cleaning Tools

There are a few potential problems with DIY duct cleaning. You may not be able to reach all of the duct surfaces. Further, duct cleaning is an intensive project that takes time, skill, and experience. For a thorough job using commercial vacuums and preventive measures to keep from contaminating your home, contact your HVAC professional.
