When You Should Replace Your HVAC Ductwork

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: March 25, 2021

You could be forgiven for not paying much attention to your ductwork because of its hidden placement. However, your ductwork requires attention, maintenance, and even replacement occasionally. So how do you even know when it’s time to replace your ducts given that you hardly see them? Here are some of the circumstances that make ductwork replacement necessary.

Age

With proper care, ductwork can last for more than a decade. Nevertheless, it can deteriorate over time and cause problems like poor performance, comfort issues, and overuse of energy after lasting more than 10 years.

If you want to install a new high-efficiency HVAC unit, your aging ductwork may not be capable of working with modern, efficient technology. For example, it may be too small to work with a new system because of higher airflow. An HVAC company can perform Manual J and D calculations to determine the ideal ductwork layout for your new system.

Mold Contamination

When your ductwork is contaminated with mold, it will spread spores and odors whenever your HVAC system runs. This could lead to intense allergies and health complications. It’s best to replace moldy ducts to protect the overall health of your family. This is where knowledge of ductwork replacement comes in handy.

Poor Design or Installation

Poorly planned or installed ductwork makes optimal comfort and efficiency virtually impossible. For example, airflow is better the shorter and straighter your ducts run. If your ducts have many twists, turns, and haven’t followed other installation best practices, then efficiency of air movement is reduced. You could need ductwork replacement.

Severe Damage

Debris can significantly damage your ductwork. Damages like punctures and dents can interfere with your HVAC system’s effectiveness considerably. If you spot visible damage to your ductwork, you should call an HVAC professional to assess it.

If any of the issues above apply to your ducts, contact an HVAC professional to examine them and advise you accordingly. If you need ductwork replacement or repair and any other HVAC services in the Lorain area, please contact the heating and cooling professionals at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning.
