Good maintenance keeps your HVAC system’s components running reliably for years, but no part lasts forever. Knowing which HVAC replacement parts you’re likely to need first helps you plan in advance. Here are some of the parts to keep an eye on.
Thermostat.
Most thermostats last around 10 years. After that, the wiring starts to wear out, dust builds up, and the heat anticipator can fail. A malfunctioning thermostat causes your system to run at the wrong temperature — or to not run at all.
Contactor and Capacitors.
Working together, these electrical components help provide power to the entire system, so they sustain a lot of wear. When they fail, you might hear your system’s fan running but not get any heating or cooling. As important as they are, they’re some of the cheapest HVAC replacement parts.
Igniter.
In a fuel-burning furnace, the igniter creates the spark that ignites the fuel to produce heat. How long they last depends partly on their design, but some break down in just four years, even if they’re well cared for. Voltage problems, moisture issues, cracks, and debris are common causes of igniter failure.
Flame Sensor.
This component protects you from carbon monoxide poisoning by shutting off the furnace if fuel is escaping but not burning as it should. Often, a malfunctioning flame sensor just needs a good cleaning, but sometimes they rust, crack, or otherwise fail and have to be replaced.
Blower Motor.
Also called the fan motor, this workhorse runs the fan that pushes heated or cooled air through your duct system. It can run for 20 years or more, but overheating and damp conditions can cause it to wear out early. The blower motor is among the more costly HVAC replacement parts.
Compressor.
This critical part of your AC pressurizes the refrigerant before pumping it into the condenser. This component can fail due to dirty coils, blocked or damaged refrigerant lines, or an incorrect refrigerant charge, which are all preventable problems. Replacement isn’t cheap, so it pays to stay up on maintenance to protect this component.
