As summer approaches, so do higher temperatures. You want your HVAC system to keep your home comfortable, but you also don’t want sky-high energy bills. While you may be familiar with some of the parts of the indoor HVAC unit, such as the air filter and the thermostat, are you familiar with the outdoor HVAC unit and how it should work to your advantage? Here’s what to know!
Outdoor HVAC Unit: Blower Assembly
HVAC systems are all about airflow. You obviously want temperature-controlled airflow through your home that keeps you comfortable. That requires unrestricted airflow through the indoor HVAC unit. The outdoor HVAC unit needs unrestricted airflow, too, as an integral stage of the entire HVAC system’s operation.
The blower assembly is comprised of a motor that spins and a blower which pulls air across the heat exchanger. Free airflow instigates the release of heat energy, which is necessary to keep your home comfortable.
Outdoor HVAC Unit: Compressor
The compressor makes it possible for refrigerant inside the heat exchanger to release heat energy. The compressor puts refrigerant vapor under extreme pressure to super-heat it as it changes state to a hot liquid while it flows into the heat exchanger.
Outdoor HVAC Unit: Condenser
The heat exchanger in the outdoor unit is called a condenser. Condenser coils are typically made of copper and aluminum, which allows for the efficient exchange of heat energy between hot refrigerant and outside air.
Maintaining the Outdoor Unit
Maintaining the outdoor HVAC unit is just as important as maintaining the indoor HVAC unit. It’s important to schedule annual HVAC maintenance with your HVAC contractor. There are also important tasks you can perform to ensure ongoing cooling and heating efficiency:
- To allow unrestricted airflow to the outdoor unit, maintain a clear space of at least 2 feet on all sides.
- Periodically check the outdoor unit to ensure leaves or other debris aren’t stuck in the grille and fins.
- Provide shade with vegetation or trees to help maximize heat exchange.
