What Is the Normal Air Quality Index and How Does It Work?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: June 10, 2021

You spend a good deal of time in your home, so you want the air you’re breathing to be clean and healthy. Low-quality air indicates the presence of irritants and pollutants that can negatively impact your comfort and aggravate health issues such as asthma. What you really want (and need) is a normal air quality index in your home.

What Is the Normal Air Quality Index?

The normal air quality index is a classification scale used by the EPA that rates air quality on a scale of one to six based on a value index ranging from 0 to 500. It tracks common air pollutants such as ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and others. These air pollutants can get into your home and reduce air quality if your HVAC system is not performing as well as it should and properly circulating and filtering your home’s air.

Things That Affect Your Home’s Air Quality

  • Airborne Pollutants. The air quality in your home is negatively impacted by various airborne pollutants. These include outdoor sources such as pollen, molds, smog, and those listed on the normal air quality index. Indoor sources can include smoke, dust, and pet dander.
  • Lack of Proper Airflow. An issue that often affects indoor air quality is bad airflow. Without efficient circulation, dust and other irritants can collect in your home and throughout the ductwork. Reduced airflow can also affect your home’s comfort levels and overall health.
  • Bad Ventilation. A lack of ventilation in your home can cause your home’s air to become stagnant over time. This is due to pollutants collecting in your home and a lack of fresh air entering your home through outside sources.
