Know Which Energy Saving Temperature for AC to Use

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: August 19, 2021

Everyone likes to save energy, but none of us want to be uncomfortable over the summer. Let’s take a look at the best energy saving temperature for AC, along with a few other techniques that will help you stay cool during these warmest months of the year.

Best Temperature Settings for the Summer

As the temperatures rise during the summer, it’s almost like an instinct to immediately reach for the thermostat to turn it down. The problem is that keeping the thermostat too low will burn through energy very quickly. To alleviate that issue, use these three basic guidelines to know the best energy saving temperature for AC during the summer:

  • 78 degrees while at home
  • 82 degrees while sleeping
  • 85 degrees when away

Keep in mind that these are generalizations and that some members of your household may not be comfortable with the first two temperatures. Try these settings, and if anyone complains (or you yourself don’t like it), turn the thermostat down by a degree or two each day until you get to the sweet spot.

Other Techniques to Lower Energy Usage

Aside from the best energy saving temperature for AC during the summer, there are other techniques you can use to stay cool. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Schedule an Annual HVAC Check. You should always schedule an annual analysis of your AC by a qualified HVAC technician to ensure that it’s working properly.
  • Turn on the Fans. Fans use a very small amount of energy, so use them either independently of your AC unit or in conjunction with it.
  • Check the Insulation. Either check the insulation yourself or hire a professional to determine if more should be added in some areas.
  • Upgrade the Thermostat. Upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat will give you much more control over the usage of your system.

You’ll definitely lower your utility bills by using the best energy saving temperature for AC, but you also need to keep your system in tiptop shape. The friendly professionals at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning can help make that happen. We currently serve Lorain, Elyria, Oberlin, and the surrounding areas.
