Air-Duct Cleaning Tools as Indoor Air Quality Solutions

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: October 19, 2021

Many HVAC companies claim to provide duct cleaning. However, not all of them are equipped to do it properly. A thorough cleaning must be able to remove dangerous contaminants such as mold and mildew growth, slime, and even pests that may be living inside your ducts. To ensure you’re getting the duct cleaning you need, it’s important to be sure your technician is using the right equipment to provide you with the best indoor air quality solutions. Here’s what the cleaning process involves.

Types of Equipment

When it comes to duct cleaning, there are two different devices that can be used. The most powerful is a truck-mounted vacuum, powered by a diesel motor. The hose is brought into the house and attached to your vent. This level of power allows it to draw all the debris and contaminants out of your vents, where it can be safely eliminated.

Sometimes, HVAC technicians use a portable vacuum instead. While it doesn’t have the power of the truck-mounted model, it can still handle smaller jobs. However, the portable unit should still exhaust outdoors. If it discharges air inside, you must be sure it’s equipped with a HEPA filter to prevent contaminants from getting into your home.

Once the vacuuming is done, there are specialized tools to reach deep into your ductwork and clean out any remaining debris. Some are brushes, but many technicians use air sweeps and air whips, which emit a concentrated spray of air through the vent.

Choosing a Duct-Cleaning Technician

How do you make sure your duct cleaner is qualified to do the job? First, check to see if they’re certified members of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association. Then, have them test your ducts and provide proof of the specific contaminants. Finally, talk to them about your cleaning options to work as indoor air quality solutions. Sometimes there are other indoor air quality solutions for eliminating contaminants that are more practical and less costly than a full duct cleaning.
