You know the feeling: Something sounds or even smells amiss with your HVAC system. Maybe the fan starts to vibrate or clink in the outdoor condenser or inside the cabinet. Maybe there’s a banging sound in the compressor. Or in winter, there’s a burning smell from the furnace. Regardless of the origin, you’re bound to be concerned, particularly if the malfunction occurs at the height of the heating or cooling season. It could mean you’re stuck, having to do without your AC or your heating unit when you need it most. So what do you do if you need emergency heating repair this winter?
Tips for Getting Emergency Heating Repair
- Make a maintenance contract with an HVAC company. The best measure you can take is to sign a service contract with an HVAC company. In most cases, this means the company will quickly respond to any emergency you might have. Otherwise, you may have to wait a matter of days during peak periods to get your unit serviced when you need emergency heating repair the most.
- Check to see that the unit is getting power. Before you call for help, turn the unit off at the controls. Wait five minutes. While you’re waiting, make sure the circuit breaker is on. Turn the unit back on.
- Check for odd sounds, smells, or other signs of malfunction. Is the fan turning on? Is the heating cycling on? You will need to report this, as well as the precise nature of the smells or sounds that your unit is making, when you make a call. For instance, is there a rotten-egg smell coming from your furnace? Is it not delivering warm air? Is there a yellow flame burning rather than a blue one when the furnace comes on? Is the breaker tripping repeatedly? Note all these signs of malfunction to help your service tech pinpoint the problem.
- Note signs that indicate a gas or carbon monoxide leak. If your CO monitor sounds or you smell gas, vacate your home immediately. Call 911 and then call your HVAC company for instructions.
