A furnace blowing out cold air is the last thing you want to encounter in the middle of a Northeast Ohio winter. Multiple issues can make your heating system blow cold air. Let’s explore the possible causes of this problem.
Thermostat Fan Setting
If you find your furnace blowing out cold air, it could be due to the fan setting being set to “On.” When set to “On,” the blower runs 24/7, even when the furnace is off. As a result, the air coming out of your vents will feel cold sometimes. Turning the fan setting to “Auto” ensures the blower runs only when the furnace is heating the air.
Dirty Air Filter
A dirty filter restricts the movement of air through your furnace, and this makes the unit run longer and harder to provide enough heat, resulting in overheating. An overheating furnace can trip the high-limit switch, which shuts off the furnace burners. If a dirty filter is to blame, replacing it will stop your furnace from blowing cold air.
Duct Leaks
Leaks in your ductwork will allow heated air to escape, resulting in the furnace blowing out cold air. Cold air from the attic or crawl space may also get into your ducts. Duct leaks should be repaired by an HVAC professional.
The Pilot Light Has Gone Out
If your furnace has a standing pilot light, it will blow cold air if the pilot is not lit. That’s because combustion of the fuel isn’t happening. You’ll need to relight the pilot light for the fuel to burn and heat your house. If you can’t relight it, call for professional furnace repair.
Pools of Water Around the Unit
If you own a high-efficiency furnace, it will produce condensation that will exit through a condensate line. If the line is blocked or the condensate pump has broken, the condensate backs up into your furnace. The overflow kill switch will shut down your furnace. You’ll need to have the line unclogged or the broken pump fixed.
