These HVAC Tests Will Help You Maintain Your System

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: November 4, 2021

The weather is getting colder, and soon you’ll need your furnace. First, though, it’s important to make sure it’s in good working order, doing its job, and running efficiently. This means performing an HVAC test or, more likely, several. Some of them you can do yourself and some your HVAC technician will perform during annual maintenance. Here’s how to keep your system in top shape.

Self-Testing Your System

If you notice low airflow from your system, test your ductwork for leaks. Look for holes, tears, and other damage. Then, test to see if the joints have separated. Turn the system on and hold a lit candle or stick of incense up to the ductwork joints. If the flame flickers or the smoke blows to the side, there’s an air leak.

You can also test your thermostat’s accuracy. Use a wall thermometer and compare its reading to the one on your thermostat after the system has been running for a few minutes. If they don’t match, your thermostat needs recalibrating.

Both of these are just preliminary tests to confirm if there’s a problem with your system. They’re no substitute for the full test performed by a professional.

Professional HVAC Test

Your HVAC technician will likely start with an operation test. They’ll let your system go through a cycle and see how it runs. Is airflow blowing the way it needs to be? Is the air from your vents hot enough or cold enough? Does your thermostat function properly? How long does it take for your home to reach your desired temperature and how much energy are you using in the meantime?

With the proper HVAC tests, your technician has a better idea of what your system needs. They can then perform a more thorough inspection and ensure all the components are performing properly. This includes cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils, removing dust from the blower, and replacing any parts that seem to be wearing out.
