Winter is coming, so it’s important to prepare for the cold. This includes sealing air leaks and getting your furnace checked, but there’s another issue in play as well: HVAC condensation. Cold weather can cause unwanted moisture in and around your system, leading to serious problems. Here’s what to do about it.
Spotting HVAC Condensation
Moisture around your drain pan is part of the heating and cooling process. Your system is designed to dispose of it as long as you clean the drain line periodically to prevent clogs. However, moisture can also form on cold surfaces in high humidity. This makes humid areas like Ohio vulnerable during colder weather.
If you notice condensate on your vents, registers, or ductwork, that’s a problem. This moisture can lead to mold and mildew, and since it’s in your ventilation system, it can then circulate throughout your entire house. If left unchecked, it can also cause water damage.
If you do spot moisture around your vents or HVAC system, check to see where it’s coming from. Rather than condensation, it might be the result of a plumbing problem or a roof leak. These issues still need to be dealt with, but in very different ways.
Dealing with HVAC Condensation
Unwanted condensation around your vents may require a duct cleaning. Call your HVAC technician immediately. However, there are also steps you can take to reduce the risk of condensation to begin with.
First, make sure your ductwork has adequate insulation. This reduces moisture around the ducts. If your ducts are insulated, check to see that there are no holes or other damage, as insulation can wear out over time. Change your filter regularly as well. Condensate is more likely to form when there’s dirt and debris in the air.
It’s also important to schedule your annual maintenance visit. Your HVAC technician can check for problems in advance that might cause unwanted condensation and fix them before they become more serious.
