How long should your HVAC system last? That depends. A reputable brand of HVAC installed by a skilled, licensed consultant could last anywhere from 12 to even 20 years, particularly if you have gotten consistent preventative maintenance. But nothing lasts forever, and even the most reliable brands of HVAC units wear out over time. So what are the HVAC replacement signs you should look out for?
Frequent Repairs
Having to call your technician frequently due to breakdowns and the need for repairs is one of the strongest HVAC replacement signs. Frequent repairs will not only cost you a lot over the long term, they may also result in a breakdown when you need the heat or air conditioning most. Furthermore, some repairs are just too expensive. If a compressor fails, for instance, it’s probably better to consider replacing the unit rather than just fixing the compressor.
Long Running Times
Even when you replace worn-out parts, your system may still wear out over time so that the entire unit needs replacement. One of the HVAC replacement signs that this is happening is when the unit runs for excessively long periods but does not achieve set thermostat points, leaving the home too cold or too hot.
Loud Noises
Loud noises may indicate that a part is broken that can be replaced, such as a fan, a motor, a blower, or other moving part. However, some loud noises are indicative of a larger problem. If you hear a grinding noise from the outdoor compressor unit, it could be worn-out pistons. These pistons compress refrigerant gas before it goes to the condenser coils to release heat. This grinding noise is a sign that the pistons are wearing out.
Leaking Refrigerant
Signs that refrigerant is leaking include puddles around the AC and/or warm air blowing through vents. While the causes of leaking refrigerant may be fixed, if you have an older system that uses Freon, it might be time to replace the AC altogether, as Freon is no longer being manufactured.
