Know Which AC Brands Are Best as Summer Approaches

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: May 5, 2022

AC BrandsProminent AC brands are more plentiful than ever, offering a wider variety of choices, ranging from entry-level basic models to upscale, high-efficiency units. Purchasing a new central air conditioner is a meaningful expense for most homeowners. So, it’s important to research and carefully consider all available options. These are some of the major AC brands you’ll likely encounter while you’re shopping.

Trane

Founded in 1913, it’s among the oldest AC brands in the heating/cooling industry. Trane is particularly well known for durable, long-lasting units, exemplified by its Weatherguard outdoor AC components that resist severe weather and heat. Trane air conditioning provides some of the highest efficiency ratings available, utilizing variable speed compressors and the company’s ComfortLink II technology that enables communication between all units and the central thermostat, as well as remote monitoring and control.

Rheem

This is another company that evolved from early-20th-century heating into residential air conditioning in the 1950s. Rheem has cultivated an established reputation for AC energy efficiency and environmental consciousness, setting a corporate goal to reduce greenhouse emissions by 50% by the year 2025. Rheem air-conditioning units are particularly energy friendly, producing lower operating costs with its EcoNet technology.

Carrier

The company founder was Willis Carrier, generally considered the father of modern air conditioning with his groundbreaking 1902 patent. Today, Carrier remains a leading player in the AC market, breaking more new ground with very high-efficiency SEER 21 units like the Infinity 21 series. Carrier also offers lower-priced, standard-efficiency units known as the Comfort 16 series.

York

York central air conditioning units cool classic buildings like the Empire State Building and the U.S. Capitol. For your home, the company offers the Affinity high-efficiency product line that also boasts among the quietest central AC units available, with decibel levels as low as 54. Lower-cost LX models aren’t as quiet but offer SEER efficiency ratings of 17, well above the minimum industry standard.
