AC parts get a real workout during a hot Ohio summer. Cooling the house is a multistage process that relies on a complex interaction of AC parts, all of which must function to exact specifications. A single defective component — or one that is merely marginal — can interrupt cool comfort for the entire house.
Air conditioners today are more reliable than ever and provide longer expected service life. Still, wear and tear takes its toll on AC parts. Read on to find out which parts of your cooling system are most likely to require service on a hot summer day.
Condensate Drain Clog
The evaporator coil in a central AC generates gallons of condensate daily. Condensate collects in the drain pan beneath the indoor air handler, then flows into the home’s drain system. Mold or algae growth may cause clogs that trigger a damaging drain-pan overflow. Inspection and treatment to inhibit mold and algae growth is part of annual preventive maintenance.
Refrigerant Leaks
The evaporator coil absorbs indoor heat while the outdoor condenser coil disperses heat. Both the evaporator and condenser coil circulate refrigerant under pressure. Over time, refrigerant leakage may cause a system shutdown. An HVAC technician with specialized equipment can locate and repair leaks, then restore the refrigerant charge to proper specifications.
Contactor Malfunction
When the thermostat signals for cooling, the powerful compressor in a central AC requires 220-volt electricity to actuate. The contactor is a spring-loaded switch that delivers high voltage directly to the compressor. Over time, contactors are subject to wear and may malfunction. Due to hazardous high voltage, contactor replacement should be handled by a qualified HVAC technician only.
Compressor Failure
The AC compressor is the system’s most expensive component. Failure after years of operation requires a decision. If the unit’s out of warranty, upgrading to a new air conditioner may be the preferable option versus the high cost of replacing the compressor alone. You’ll also get improved energy efficiency, better cooling performance, and a new warranty.
