Outdoor HVAC units are designed to be waterproof and fairly durable to withstand the elements. However, wind and rain aren’t the only things outside that can cause damage or keep your system from operating efficiently. Here’s how you can protect your outdoor unit and keep it running smoothly.
- Clearance. Twigs, hedges, or even tall grass around your unit can impede its airflow, forcing it to work harder to cool your home, using more energy and wearing out the unit. Always keep at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides of your outdoor HVAC units. Cut the grass; trim back the surrounding trees and bushes; clear away any sticks, dirt, leaves, and other debris; and remove any toys, tools, furniture, or anything else that may be nearby.
- Yardwork. Mowing and trimming are important, but be careful as you do it. If your lawn mower or weed whacker get too close to the unit, the blades can damage the coils or the coolant line. They can also kick up dust, which gets into the system and impedes airflow. The best option is to elevate the unit onto a concrete platform, away from plants and debris. If that’s not an option, then keep the appliances away from your outdoor HVAC units and tend to that area by hand as much as possible.
- Shade. At the peak of summer, sometimes your outdoor unit can overheat. This may simply trip the circuit breaker and cause it to shut off, or it may result in short-cycling and other damage. Placing the unit under an awning or overhang can give it the shade it needs to keep it cool on those blazing-hot days.
- Hail guards. Install a mesh, metal covering around your unit that can protect it from hail damage. The metal is strong and durable, while the mesh ensures proper airflow so you can keep the hail guard on your unit year-round without impacting performance.
