Is Your AC Blowing Out Warm Air Only? Find Out Why.

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: September 20, 2022

Nothing beats walking into a cool house on a sweltering summer day. Unfortunately, you may come home expecting to cool off, only to be met by warm air blowing from your air vents. This is a common HVAC malfunction that homeowners experience in the summer. Listed below are the common causes of an air conditioner blowing only warm air.

Wrong Thermostat Settings

Your air conditioner could be blowing warm air because you’ve set it to “heat” instead of “cool.” The fan setting could also be the culprit if it’s set to “on” rather than “auto.” The “on” function will make the fan blow air even when the air conditioner isn’t running. Check the thermostat settings before giving your HVAC technician a call.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil extracts heat from your home’s air. It freezes if it doesn’t absorb heat for a certain period. Some factors that can cut off airflow and lead to a frozen coil include:

  • Dirt covering the evaporator coil
  • Ductwork problems
  • Dirty air filter
  • Refrigerant leak

A frozen evaporator coil impedes the flow of conditioned air.

Obstructed Outdoor Unit

Overgrown landscaping and other debris around your outdoor AC unit can clog the system, making it work harder and overheat. Give the unit 2 feet or more of breathing space. Keep the area around it free of dirt, vegetation, debris, and any other obstruction.

Compressor Problem

The refrigerant gas in your air conditioner turns to a liquid to effectively cool your home’s air. A malfunctioning compressor hinders this process.

Loss of Power

The circuit breaker may automatically shut off the power to your AC unit if the unit demands too much power. You’ll need to reset the AC circuit breaker to restore power to the unit.

Keep in mind that some TLC, such as changing your air filter regularly and scheduling professional maintenance, will help prevent your AC system from blowing warm air in the future. If you need AC repair or maintenance in the Lorain area, don’t hesitate to contact the cooling professionals at Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning.
