While a standard air filter is installed in every central HVAC system, air purification can take indoor air quality to the next level. HVAC air filters are limited when it comes to removing the smallest particulates and pathogens that may cause discomfort, allergic reactions, and even illness. Installing a filter efficient enough to trap these minute particles would also obstruct system airflow excessively, inhibiting circulation of cooling and heat throughout the house.
Air purification provided by a separate unit — independent of the central air system — provides highly efficient purification and other treatment to the air in single rooms and limited spaces. Air purifiers are often portable and can be moved among different rooms in the house. Here are some of the essentials to know when considering one for purposes of air purification:
- A typical air purifier incorporates a high-efficiency HEPA filter rated to remove 99.97% of airborne particulates down to a size of 0.3 microns. This includes most common household particles such as dust, pollen, bacteria, and mold spores. HEPA filtration alone only captures solid particles and does not remove aerosol pollutants such as fumes or gases.
- Carbon filters in purifiers remove gases from the indoor environment, including chemical fumes such as the common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are emitted by a variety of household substances such as paints, solvents, cleaning solutions, building materials, carpets, and furniture.
- Air purifiers may incorporate UV bulbs that expose the airflow to ultraviolet wavelengths. Light in the ultraviolet range is a proven disinfectant that neutralizes living airborne pathogens and microorganisms, including viruses and mold. In hospitals, UV lights have been proven to kill 97% of drug-resistant bacteria.
- While most air purifiers do not include a dehumidifying function, some models do include a humidifier to add water vapor to indoor air in locales where humidity is typically very low.
