Ways to Tell If Your Home’s HVAC Unit Is Up to Code

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: October 11, 2022

Having an HVAC system that’s up to code is important for both safety and energy efficiency. Building codes for residential and commercial buildings typically change over the years. Find out more about the importance of ensuring that your HVAC system meets these requirements and how to tell if it is, in fact, up to code.

Age of Your HVAC System

When was your HVAC system installed? If you have an older system that was installed 15 to 20 years ago, it might not meet current building codes. Since these codes change over the years, an older system is more likely to not be up to code compared to newer HVAC systems.

Renovations

Have you done any renovations to your home? Remodeling or renovating your home might cause your HVAC system to not meet current requirements. This depends on which part of your home you changed and how extensive these changes were. For example, changing the electrical system in the area your HVAC system is in might mean that it doesn’t meet current building codes.

Previous Repairs

If you bought a home from someone who made their own repairs to the HVAC system, this could affect whether or not it meets building codes. This can result in safety issues if repairs weren’t done properly, so it’s important to find out.

No Home Inspection

If you didn’t have a home inspection done when you bought your home, you might not know if your HVAC system meets current building codes.

What to Do

How do you know if your HVAC system meets current codes? The best way to determine this is by having HVAC technicians inspect your system and perform routine maintenance. This helps ensure that any problems or code violations are found so they can be handled. Keep in mind that meeting these codes is important to ensure you have a safe and efficient HVAC system.

If you need help finding out if your HVAC system is up to code, please contact the experts at Energy 1 Heating and Air Conditioning. Our technicians can come to your Lorain home to check your HVAC system.
