Your furnace isn’t working the way it used to. It’s served you well, but now it may be time to replace it. When’s the best time for buying a new furnace? Here’s what you need to know.
The Offseason
If your furnace gives out in the middle of winter, you’ll have to get a new one, but it will be much more expensive. Manufacturers know you can’t get through the Ohio winter without one, so when temperatures go down, prices go up.
Ideally, the best time to buy your furnace is in the spring, when they’re not in demand. Around May, the prices will be lower, and you can splurge on a better-quality, more efficient model. September and October are also good furnace-buying months. Often, companies offer discounts just before heating season in anticipation of the higher demand.
Signs You Should Be Buying a New Furnace
Buying a new furnace in the spring takes planning. Most people don’t know their furnace is on its last legs until it gives out just when prices are at their highest. How can you anticipate needing a new furnace?
Start with its age. A good furnace can last up to 30 years, but if it’s older than 15 and having problems, you can save a lot of hassle by upgrading to a more efficient model now. Likewise, if your energy bills are rising or your furnace breaks down more than twice a year, a new one will likely save you money.
Finally, if your current furnace isn’t making your house comfortable, it may be time for a new one. Does it take a long time to heat your home? Is the heating uneven, with hot and cold spots in different places? Is there dust in the air, even after you’ve changed the filter? Have your HVAC technician check it out. They may be able to make things better with some basic adjustments, but they may also recommend replacing your furnace.
