Have you thought about employing some natural heating practices to save energy? To be sure, it’s not that hard to help out your heating equipment so that you don’t have to turn up the thermostat on cold days. Here are some rather simple ways to save money on your energy bill and to lower your carbon footprint this winter.
- Open the window treatments and let the sunshine in. Allowing the sunshine in your home is an easy way to warm up the interior with solar radiation. In the morning, open the blinds, drapes, or shades and let the sunshine in all day long. When the sun goes down, close the window treatments to keep the heat inside. You could also get automated window treatments that open and close when you program the setting.
- Add rugs and carpets. Rugs and carpets can actually absorb warmth and make your home feel warmer. So think about installing carpet in a room or two or just add some rugs on top of the cold tile and you’ll feel the difference.
- Air-seal your home. Even if you have a new home, it’s possible that when it settles, minute cracks will start to open up and allow cold air in while letting your warm air escape. Walk through the house and seal up places where cold air is finding its way inside: along baseboards, under exterior doors, around window frames, and through holes to exterior walls for pipes, cables, and wires. Use insulation, caulk, and weatherstripping to seal cracks and holes.
- Schedule preventative maintenance. Keeping your HVAC system in good working order is one of the best ways to ensure that it runs efficiently. Your service tech will catch potential parts failures before they cause you big, expensive problems — and before your system starts to run inefficiently.
- Change your filter regularly. Your HVAC filter should be changed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A dirty filter will slow airflow and cause your heating system to run inefficiently.
