Your HVAC system uses more energy than any other appliance in your home. How can you get through the freezing winter without running your furnace? That’s why it’s important to make sure it runs efficiently. Here are a few tips for maximizing your furnace efficiency.
- Maintenance. Ideally, this should be done in the fall, but it’s better to do it later than not at all. Once a year, your HVAC contractor should perform basic furnace maintenance, such as oiling the motor, replacing failing components, checking thermostat settings, etc. This helps keep the unit operating at optimum furnace efficiency as long as possible.
- Filter replacement. If your air filter is clogged, it restricts airflow, causing your system to run longer, using more energy. Check the filter regularly and replace it every three to six months to ensure the air from your furnace reaches your home.
- Duct sealing. Air escaping through pinhole leaks in your ductwork can cause energy losses of up to 30%, making leak sealing an essential part of furnace efficiency. Look for holes, tears, and other duct damage, as well as places where two sections of ductwork have come apart. Repair the damage with metal tape or mastic sealant.
- Air-leak sealing. Leaks in your ducts cause warm air to escape. Leaks in your home cause cold outdoor air to leak in, displacing the warm air and wasting energy. Get a home energy audit to see where there might be leaks in your house and have them repaired to keep the warm air in.
- Insulation. The best way to get warm air to stay in your home is by insulating your attic. Hot air rises, but insulation slows the flow of heat, so your house stays warmer for longer periods. Even if you have insulation, it may have settled over time. Check to see if the insulation in your attic is enough to cover your joists. If it isn’t, add more.
