The time to check on your heat pump is not when the cold weather arrives – by then all the HVAC technicians will be busy making house calls on people who forgot to schedule heat pump maintenance before the winter weather showed up. Right now is the best time to contact a qualified technician and have the maintenance done. When winter arrives, you’ll be confident that you’re prepared for it, and there won’t be any nasty surprises.
What the Homeowner Can Do
- Air filters are a prime source of poor performance in any forced-air heating system, because they can become so clogged with debris and dust that air circulation is reduced significantly. It is very important that your system air filters be checked and either replaced or cleaned (for reusable models) to get ready for the coming cold season. In extreme cases, clogged filters can even damage your heating equipment, which could lead to costly repairs.
- Any vegetation which has grown within two feet of the outdoor component of the heat pump should be removed, so air intake is not restricted.
- The outdoor coil should be cleaned with a gentle rinsing from your garden hose.
What the Technician Can Do
- Most of the maintenance on the heat pump should be left to a certified HVAC professional. He or she will inspect all wiring and electrical connections, the level of chemical refrigerant, the coils, the condensate drain line and the drain pan, and will then lubricate all moving parts. He or she also will inspect and adjust airflow, fan operation and ductwork.
