The last thing you want during a heat wave or a hot summer day is for your air conditioning to stop working. Unfortunately, this can happen from time to time. What should you do if you have a broken air conditioner, so that you and your family can still stay cool? Find out what steps to take if you lose air conditioning this summer.
Perform Some Basic Troubleshooting
If your air conditioner stops running, the first thing to do is check your thermostat. Your thermostat might just need new batteries. If your thermostat still won’t work, try turning your air conditioner on manually to determine if the problem is your thermostat or HVAC system. You should also check your circuit breaker to see if your air conditioner tripped it. If so, all you’ll need to do is flip it back on. If you still don’t have air conditioning, you should have a technician come over to check and repair your HVAC system.
Close the Curtains and Leave Windows Shut
Opening the windows might seem like a good idea in order to let fresh air in. However, you’ll also be letting in humidity and hot air from outside. Instead, leave your windows closed. You should also close the curtains to avoid letting in sunlight during the day, which will heat up your home.
Use Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans can help make rooms feel more comfortable when it’s hot out. Turn ceiling fans on to circulate the air inside your home. This helps you feel cooler overall. Make sure the ceiling fans are moving in a counter-clockwise direction, which pushes air down into the room.
Dehumidify Your Home
If you have a dehumidifier, set it up in the room where you’ll be spending the most time in order to reduce the humidity levels. This helps you feel more comfortable when you don’t have air conditioning.
