This is the year you’re finally doing those home renovations you’ve always talked about! You’ve contacted the contractor, and everything’s set. But have you talked to an HVAC technician?
There are a number of HVAC considerations to keep in mind when remodeling your home.
Making Changes
If you’re adding a new room onto your house, you’ll need more ductwork, so conditioned air can reach the extension. You may also need a new HVAC system, to accommodate the extra square footage. But even if you’re just renovating existing rooms, rather than adding new ones, a new HVAC system could be required.
Any changes you make to your home impacts its envelope, the walls that separate it from the outside and the heating and cooling needs within those walls. Things like new windows and doors will make your house more energy efficient. Which is great, except now your HVAC system may be too big. If it is, it will start cycling on and off too quickly, wasting energy and wearing out the unit prematurely.
Also keep in mind that your home isn’t the only thing changing. New safety regulations and standards are constantly being written, and if your HVAC system is on the older side, it may no longer up to code. Make sure your system complies with current regulations as you renovate.
Making Upgrades
Home renovations are the perfect excuse to invest in some upgrades to your system. Get a more efficient model to help reduce your energy bill and save you money. Find an HVAC system with the blue Energy Star logo, certifying that it’s been proven to save both money and energy over similar models, without sacrificing features.
Your HVAC technician may recommend a zoning system. By separating your home into zones according to their individual heating and cooling needs, you ensure an even temperature throughout the house, while reducing overall energy costs.
