Leaks in your ductwork can cost you 20-30 percent (or more) of the heated or cooled air produced by your HVAC equipment. Having HVAC tape skillfully installed can curb these losses, and help lower your energy bills. Here’s what you need to know about this helpful HVAC product and its proper use.
HVAC and Duct Tape Are Not the Same
If you think you already know a lot about duct tape, the tape used for HVAC ductwork isn’t the same thing. Despite its name, duct tape should never be used to seal HVAC ducts. It’s not made for conditions of extreme or high temperatures – which is what often occurs in your ducts that deliver cooled/heated air, and may run through unconditioned areas. HVAC tape is designed for these types of applications, which is why industry pros use it when sealing ductwork.
HVAC Tape’s Unique Qualities
HVAC contractors know the importance of sealing ducts with code-compliant UL-listed tapes that have the adhesion capability and tensile/shear strength to seal effectively and stay in place for many years. Being UL-listed signifies these tapes have passed stringent tests for flame and temperature resistance, leakage, static load, humidity, mold growth and other conditions. There are two types used for different applications:
- UL A-P tapes for sealing rigid ducting or ductboard. These are usually aluminum or an aluminum foil alloy and have a release liner.
- UL B-FX tapes suitable for sealing flexible ducting, and made from either cloth, film or foil.
Tape Installation Best Practices
An experienced HVAC pro knows the ideal type of tape to use for your ductwork, and the steps to take for proper installation, which include:
- Cleaning the surfaces to get rid of soot, oil and debris that might adversely affect adhesion.
- Applying the tape carefully to ensure it conforms to the duct’s shape with no gaps or wrinkles.
- Wiping down the tape firmly with a squeegee to promote optimal adhesion that forms a lasting bond.
