When the cold descends in northeast Ohio, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your furnace is going to run properly. If you’re concerned about your old furnace making it through another Ohio winter, based on its age or problems you experienced last winter, this only adds to the wisdom of scheduling a pre-season maintenance check or tuneup. This will ensure you and your family’s safety, and increase the likelihood that your furnace won’t break down when those frigid winds blow in off Lake Erie. Here are some signs that your furnace may need replacement:
- If your furnace has endured a dozen or more years, it’s worth getting checked out. Often, older furnaces gradually lose their efficiency. Unusually high energy bills, or uneven heating in different rooms in your home, are good signs that your furnace is ready for the HVAC junkyard. The good news is that with a furnace upgrade, you can achieve vastly better energy efficiency, leading to lower heating bills and better home comfort year after year.
- An abnormal sound coming from your furnace can be cause for suspicion. If you remember this from last winter, mention it to your maintenance technician so he track down the problem during the fall tuneup.
- If the flame light more yellow than blue, this may signal an improper fuel mix as well as the potential for carbon monoxide leakage. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home to keep your family protected. If you see the flame is yellow, immediately notify a service technician to come out and check it.
For all of these reasons, do the prudent thing and schedule a fall maintenance check for your furnace. This can save you a lot of money and peace of mind this winter when the temperatures remain below freezing for weeks at a time. Getting your furnace looked at now will give you more time to make an educated decision on whether to upgrade or repair than if you had to do it quickly in an emergency.
