There is nothing like coming home to a cold house on a winter’s day and being unable to get your heating system to work. This applies to boilers as well as other types of heating equipment. So what do you do when you have boiler problems? Below are several troubleshooting tips to help you address typical boiler problems:
- Check circuit breakers or fuses to makes sure the circuit has not been tripped or a fuse blown. If they have, reset breakers and/or replace the fuse.
- Check an older model boiler to make sure the pilot light is burning. Relight the pilot light if it has gone out.
- Check the electronic ignition if you do not have a gas pilot on your boiler. If it is not igniting, call an HVAC specialist to have the situation checked out.
- Check that the thermostat is in the “heat” mode and at the correct setting. Try adjusting the setting by a couple of degrees to see if the thermostat is functioning.
- Check the water intake valve, pressure release valve and natural gas or propane control valve to make sure they are in the proper position.
- Check to make sure the condensation pipe is not frozen. If it is, call a professional to thaw the pipe properly so you don’t end up with a burst pipe during the thawing process.
If you have checked all of the above and found no issues, it is time to call in a professional to give your boiler system a full inspection. It’s also a good idea to have your boiler system undergo routine maintenance annually by a heating and cooling specialist in order to keep your system in good working order, so you can minimize inconvenient boiler problems.
