To understand how prepared your home is for another Lake Erie winter, you’ll definitely want to take its insulation into account. Ask yourself these questions. What type of insulation do you have inside your home? Where is it installed? Does it have the proper thermal resistance (R-value)? While you can partially answer some of these questions, a trusted HVAC technician will be needed to get a full picture of how well insulated your home is. This will pay dividends in both winter and summer.
The higher the R-value of a particular type of insulation, the better it blocks heat transfer. You can increase R-values both by upgrading the type of insulation and just adding layers of insulation. Unfortunately, if your insulation is quite old, it’s likely that it has an R-value lower than that of newer, more advanced insulating solutions. Was your insulation installed decades ago? If so, talk to a specialist in regards to possible maintenance, repair or replacement.
An HVAC specialist can help install the appropriate protections against heat loss this winter (and heat gain in the summer). You might think your home is up to scratch, but insulation can deteriorate, drop or sag, and/or become damp after many years of use. This is why it’s always important to regularly check your walls, roof and attic for any potential heat loss – no need for stress, though, as such problems can be easily repaired.
