If the air quality in your home has deteriorated or your HVAC system is not working to its optimum efficiency, the reason may be dirty air ducts. Ductwork cleaning is a task that is particularly important under certain circumstances, and these guidelines will help you decide if it’s necessary:
Reasons for Ductwork Cleaning
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that duct cleaning need not be done regularly as a matter of course, but if certain conditions apply, the homeowner should hire a professional company to do the work.
For instance, ductwork should be inspected and possibly cleaned if:
- Large amounts of dust are being discharged into your home through the vents.
- Mold is growing in or around the ducts.
- Water damage has occurred in the ducts, particularly if they are lined with insulation.
- Ducts are blocked with debris.
- Members of the household are suffering from unexplained allergies and illnesses, particularly of the respiratory type.
- Your home smells unpleasant and the source of the odor cannot be found.
Who Should Clean Your Ductwork?
Duct cleaning ideally should be done by professionals who know what they’re doing. Thorough cleaning of ducts includes sweeping or vacuuming them, using special equipment, as well as inspecting the coils and any other components that air passes over or through.
Duct cleaning should take at least two or three hours to complete, and proper equipment must be used. The procedure is not cheap, but it’s worthwhile in order to have it done correctly and efficiently. Use a service provider that has been recommended or who has an excellent reputation and is licensed for HVAC work. If you attempt to clean your own ducts or hire a cheap contractor, you may end up with more problems than you started with.
