A thermostat can be your best friend during changing weather patterns, but if the control panel is off kilter, your home comfort levels can be effected. If you suspect this is the case, there are a few steps you can take to determine if your thermostat needs a replacement in order to get home temperatures back to where you would like them to be.
Start at the Beginning
You can determine if your thermostat needs a replacement by first recognizing the temperature isn’t matching your thermostat setting. If the power is off on the control panel, you can check whether or not the battery back-up is working properly.
Power down your circuit breaker and replace the batteries by opening the panel door. Then, increase your heater to at least five degrees above what you know the temperature is and see if that brings things back on line. If not, move on to checking your control panel connections.
Verify the Wire Connections
Again, you will want to turn off your circuit breaker before fiddling with the control panel wires. If you need a new panel, you can determine this by removing the heating, cooling, and power wires from their control terminals and twisting them together directly.
For heating, twist together the red and white wires, and for cooling, the green and red. When you turn the circuit breaker back on, you should have heat or cold coming from your vents, as you have bypassed your control panel altogether. Simply power down your circuit panel again, and replace your thermostat.
